Potential applications
Future markets for e.g flexible electronics require high quality functional foils which can be manufactured at a large scale and at low cost. Because of these stringent cost requirements usually low density substrate foils (polymers, paper or woven metallic matrices) are utilized. On these foils functional thin films should be processed to obtain the desired functionality of the foil, e.g. moisture and gas barrier properties, selective gas permeability, electrical conduction or light controlling and/or manipulation properties, to name only a few.
SiO2-like films deposited by Fujifilm’s APG technology have attractive mechanical properties. These films sustain high strain levels if the film thickness can be substantially reduced. 2 nm thick ultra-thin barrier films have been demonstrated with overall moisture barrier properties in the range of 10-5 g/m2d. These films can meet the strain requirements for the future bendable/flexible applications demanding excellent moisture barrier properties.
